Where Can I Find the Latest Theory Test Questions for the Driving Instructor Exam?
If you're preparing for the ADI Part 1 theory test, one of the most common questions we hear is:
“Where can I find the latest driving instructor theory test questions?”
It's a sensible question, but there's something important to understand before you start searching for the newest question bank.
You cannot get a complete copy of the questions currently being used in the real ADI Part 1 examination.
DVSA does provide licensed revision questions, but it makes clear that these are not the exact questions used in the real test. They are designed to be very similar and test the same areas of knowledge.
That distinction matters enormously when you're preparing for the ADI Part 1.

Don't Look for the Exact Questions – Learn the Subject
One of the biggest mistakes we see trainees make is spending weeks doing mock test after mock test, trying to memorise questions and answers. They start getting 90%, 95% or even 100% and naturally assume they're ready.
Then they sit the real ADI Part 1 and come back saying: “There were loads of questions I'd never seen before.”
That's exactly why simply memorising practice questions isn't enough. The question might be different, but the knowledge behind the question shouldn't be.
DVSA currently states that ADI Part 1 questions are based on sources including:
The Highway Code
Know Your Traffic Signs
Driving – The Essential Skills
The Official DVSA Guide to Learning to Drive
The Driving Instructor's Handbook
Practical Teaching Skills for Driving Instructors
National Standard for Driving Cars and Light Vans
National Standard for Driver and Rider Training
Driving Instructor Code of Practice
Relevant parts of the driving-test examiner guidance
These are the areas you need to know rather than simply learning a collection of answers.
Where Should You Get Up-to-Date ADI Part 1 Questions?
Your starting point should always be current material designed specifically for the ADI Part 1, rather than an old book, an outdated app or random questions found on social media.
DVSA licenses publishers and training providers to use its official revision-question material. Under the current licensing system, approved publishers can receive ADI Part 1 revision questions and the associated knowledge-and-understanding material.
But there's another important point. Don't assume that something is up to date simply because it's online.
Driving law changes. The Highway Code changes. DVSA guidance develops. Training terminology changes. New subjects can be introduced into theory-test question banks.
A good example is first aid. DVSA announced enhanced CPR content and questions covering automated external defibrillators (AEDs), with the new material being introduced into theory testing from 2026 and rolled out across test types.
That's why using current training material matters.
Use More Than Mock Tests
This is probably the most important advice we can give anyone studying for ADI Part 1.
Don't make mock tests your entire revision programme.
A mock test tells you whether you can answer that question. It doesn't necessarily tell you whether you understand the subject. Suppose you see this question several times:
What is the minimum tyre tread depth for a car? Eventually you'll remember the answer.
But what happens when the examination approaches the same subject differently?
Could you explain the requirements across the central three-quarters of the tyre? Do you know where the measurement applies? Do you understand the consequences of defective tyres?
That's the level you should be working towards. For every practice question, ask yourself: Could I answer this if they changed the wording?
If the answer is no, you've found a weakness worth revising.
Remember There Are Four ADI Part 1 Bands
The ADI Part 1 multiple-choice test contains 100 questions, with 25 questions from each of four categories:
Road procedure
Traffic signs and signals, car control, pedestrians and mechanical knowledge
Driving test, disabilities and the law
Publications and instructional techniques
This is another reason that simply chasing a high mock-test score can be misleading. To pass, you need at least 85 out of 100 overall AND at least 20 out of 25 in every category.
You could therefore have very strong knowledge in three areas and still fail because of a weakness in one band.
What Are the Best ADI Part 1 Questions to Practice?
The best revision isn't necessarily about finding more questions.
It's about finding questions that make you think.
We recommend using a mixture of:
Standard multiple-choice questions
Topic-specific quizzes
Questions without answer options
Flashcards
Scenario questions
“Twist” questions that approach familiar knowledge from a different direction
Questions that require you to explain why an answer is correct
Taking away the four possible answers is particularly useful.
When four answers are displayed, you can sometimes work out the correct answer by eliminating the three that look wrong.
That's useful examination technique, but it isn't necessarily knowledge.
Ask the same question without giving yourself four options and suddenly you discover whether you actually know it.
Don't Forget That You're Training to Become an Instructor
There's a bigger reason for learning the material properly. You're not simply trying to pass a theory test. You're training to become a driving instructor.
The knowledge you're studying now will come back during your ADI Part 2 driving, your ADI Part 3 instructional ability test and, eventually, when a pupil turns to you during a lesson and asks:
“Why?”
At that point, four possible answers won't appear on the windscreen.
You'll need to know the answer, understand it and be able to explain it clearly. That's why we encourage trainees to stop thinking: “Where can I find the exact latest ADI Part 1 questions?” and start thinking:
“Where are the gaps in my knowledge?”
That's the question that is far more likely to get you through the ADI Part 1 — and give you the foundation you need for Parts 2 and 3.
The Bottom Line
Use current ADI Part 1 revision questions, keep your Highway Code and supporting publications up to date, and practice with a variety of question styles.
But don't try to memorise your way through the examination. Learn the topic, not the question. If you understand the subject well enough to answer it when it's worded three or four different ways, you're doing proper ADI Part 1 preparation. And that's a much better measure of whether you're ready for the real test.
