ADI Part 1 Signs - Tunnel Ahead

Tunnel Ahead Sign

The Tunnel Ahead sign is a triangular warning sign showing the entrance to a tunnel. Like other red-bordered triangular signs, its purpose is to warn you of a potential hazard ahead so that you have time to prepare.

It can appear in both the car theory test and ADI Part 1, so you need to recognise the sign and, more importantly, understand how your driving may need to change as you approach and enter a tunnel.

Tunnel Ahead Meaning

Before entering a tunnel, check for any signs or signals controlling traffic and make sure you have enough fuel for the journey.

You should also switch on your dipped headlights and remove sunglasses if necessary so that your eyes can adjust to the reduced light. Keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front and remember that stopping distances still matter inside a tunnel.

The Highway Code advises leaving at least a 5-metre gap when stationary in a tunnel, which gives you space to manoeuvre if necessary.

For the ADI Part 1 and theory test, don't simply learn the picture and its name. Think about the practical safety knowledge connected with tunnels. Know what to do if traffic stops, what to do if your vehicle breaks down, and how to respond to signs, signals or instructions from tunnel officials.

If there is a serious incident or fire, follow the emergency signs and instructions rather than assuming the safest option is to remain with your vehicle. As with many theory-test questions, recognising the sign is only the starting point — understanding the correct action is what really matters.

Tunnel or Hump Bridge Sign

One common theory-test mistake is to confuse the Tunnel Ahead sign with the Hump Bridge sign. They can look surprisingly similar when you're working quickly through questions. The tunnel symbol looks like a dark opening or arch, whereas the Hump Bridge sign shows the curved profile of a bridge. A simple way to remember the difference is that the tunnel sign represents an opening you drive into, while the hump bridge sign represents a raised structure you drive over. Slow down when answering and look carefully at the shape rather than guessing from your first impression.
